Topcon began in 1932 as a Japanese optical instruments maker and went on to produce well regarded SLR cameras from the 1950s to the 1970s, including the RE Super, one of the first cameras with through the lens metering. Topcon exited the camera market in 1981 to concentrate on surveying and positioning equipment, and its vintage cameras are now collector pieces.
